Our mission is to establish a community medical educational program to empower underserved communities and their extended families with knowledge of how to prevent and treat the diseases that affect them.
Matthew Martel
Matthew is a co-founder of the Solo Kiko Program. He has been instrumental in guiding both the academic and social direction of the program, with a consistent focus on improving health outcomes in medically underserved communities.
Matthew has long dedicated himself to working within the Hispanic community, and his educational contributions have been formally recognized by the California Senate. This commitment to health equity is not incidental to his career goals but central to them. Matthew is a pre-pharmacy student aspiring to become a research pharmacist and academic professor, driven by a strong sense of responsibility toward underserved populations. It was this same conviction that led directly to his founding of the Solo Kiko Program.
Josh Xu Perez
Josh Xu is in junior high in Boston and works on political and social issues for the Hispanic community. His deep love and commitment toward community and culture have made him an avid proponent of empowering communities with culturally competent health care. As project manager, Josh will bring a youthful, fresh perspective to achieve our goal effectively.
Jose Perez
Jose founded and is the publisher of the Latino Journal, a national weekly digital publication. He knows the regulatory framework and leads community engagement in several policy issues. 2008, Jose organized the Latino Physicians of California (LPOC) along with Dr. Jose Arevalo. The organization sought more significant roles in dealing with healthcare policy issues, including increasing medical school admissions for Latinos. He served in that capacity as a volunteer and sometimes assists non-profit organizations. He believes the Solo Kiko Program can fill a critical missing piece in the strategy to improve health inequities.
Liliya Golas, MD
Dr. Golas is a Stanford School of Medicine graduate, the University of Colorado Ophthalmology Residency, and the University of Chicago Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship. She is a first-generation immigrant from Ukraine and has long been a strong advocate of underserved communities and improved cultural competence training in medical schools. Dr. Golas also believes community health education is the key to any healthcare program and is committed to fully supporting the Solo Kiko program.
Joseph Martel, MD
Dr. Martel is the Chief of Ophthalmology at the California Northstate College of Medicine, a former chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Sutter General and Mercy San Juan Hospitals in Sacramento as well as a former president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He has a long history of involvement in community medical issues. Dr. Martel has been appointed a member of the California Health Professions Education Foundation and has worked with California Senate and Assembly members on health issues.
Nancy Zarenda
Nancy Zarenda is an accomplished educator, Spanish language specialist, and community leader. Her experience as a language instructor and policy advisor spans public schools, colleges, police academies, government, and professional organizations.
UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities appointed Nancy as a charter member to its Research and Education Community Advisory Board. She is a nationally certified medical interpreter and a published writer.
Nancy was previously a governor appointee to the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing and was awarded Special Congressional Recognition as Outstanding Hispanic American Educator. She is honored and eager to serve this organization.
Anya Hariprasad
Anya Hariprasad is a prospective dental student with a passion for expanding access to oral healthcare and working with underserved communities. She earned her A.B. in Psychology from the University of Chicago and is currently pursuing an M.S. in Oral Biology at New York University. Her work focuses on improving insurance literacy among future dental providers, with the goal of reducing barriers to care and making oral healthcare more equitable for all patients.
